Ubuntu Spirit is a nonprofit fighting food insecurity and supporting families in need through volunteer-driven food redistribution, emergency supply drives, and community partnerships.

Our Story
Ubuntu was founded by Heather and Natalie when they learned that there were no food resources available for the food insecure in close proximity to downtown Ft. Myers. They knew they could at least alleviate some hunger simply by “slinging snacks”. Beginning in early 2020 and formally incorporated in 2021, Heather and Natalie began handing out snack bags on Monday nights and have continued to do so ever since – not missing a single week. Initially serving about 30 people each week, Heather and Natalie funded their work from their own pockets with some donations from friends. Now serving on average 100 meals each week, Ubuntu relies on fundraisers and donations of cash and food. They are frequently blessed with the resources and donations of meals, snacks, rain ponchos, and hygiene kits.

What does Ubuntu Mean?
Ubuntu originates from a Zulu word that emphasizes the interconnectedness of individuals with their surrounding societal and physical worlds. “Ubuntu” is sometimes translated as “I am because we are” or “humanity towards others.” In Xhosa, it is often meant in a more philosophical sense to mean “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”.

What We Do
Each week, the route begins in Fort Myers, looking for individuals who may need support. What once took 2 hours on Monday now takes 4 or more hours to serve those in need. Ubuntu continues to expand in their services, providing clothes, pantry food, sleeping bags, medicine and much more when one of the street friends is in need.
Since our founding in 2021, we have been able to distribute at a minimum over 400 meals per month thanks to monetary and food donations from the community.

Our Route

Our main focus includes the downtown Fort Myers and Cape Coral areas. We start at a central location and make our way around the city to ensure we can maximize the available aid.
Fun fact: We drive approximately 1,000 miles every year, covering a 7 square mile radius.
